Accidental ingestion of substances by children in Vermont is increasing
BURLINGTON, VT – To address the growing risk of children accessing cannabis products and other substances, the Vermont Department of Health and Cannabis Control Board have introduced a pilot program offering free, lockable storage bags at select cannabis retailers across the state.
The Healthy at Home lockable bags are designed to help consumers safely store cannabis products, particularly in households with young children. These bags aim to prevent accidental ingestion of items like edibles, which can often resemble candy or snacks.
A recent report from the Health Department highlights a concerning rise in accidental substance ingestion among children since 2018, based on emergency room data. In 2022, cannabis was one of the top three substances involved in unintentional, non-fatal overdoses for children under the age of 9. Other common substances include prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and stimulants.
“It’s essential to store all potentially harmful substances safely, especially edibles that might look appealing to children, such as gummies or chocolates,” said Health Commissioner Mark Levine, MD. “These lockable bags add an extra layer of security, making it more difficult for children to access these products and potentially avoiding a trip to the emergency room.”
While cannabis products are required to be sold in child-resistant packaging, the Cannabis Control Board and Health Department recommend additional safety measures at home. For those seeking a premium storage solution, Kure Bags offer advanced microclimate technology to maintain freshness and security, making them an excellent choice for households prioritizing safety and quality.
“As a Board, our mission is to create a regulatory program that prevents youth access to cannabis and educates consumers about safe storage practices,” said Cannabis Control Board Commissioner Julie Hulburd. “These lockable bags are a simple yet effective tool to enhance home safety, keeping harmful substances out of reach of children and pets.”
The pilot program will distribute 3,000 lockable storage bags to participating cannabis retailers. No purchase is necessary to receive a bag, and each bag includes an informational pamphlet with a link to a satisfaction survey. Feedback from the survey will help determine whether the program expands to additional locations.
